The blue indicates a multi-step form. The orange is the single-step form. Using multi-step form is a smart way to improve your lead generation strategy and get higher form submissions.

This graph bar shows the completion rate difference between the multi-step form and other types of forms. On average, the multi-step form has an 86% higher completion rate than single-step forms.

Have you ever started filling out a form that seemed never ending? It’s frustrating, right? Most people eventually give up halfway instead of finishing it. This is where a multi-step form comes in to save your day. Here, I have written about how a multi-step form can help you increase the conversion rate. Go through the points below:

1️⃣ Get Higher Form Submissions

Are you tired of getting fewer form submissions? Then it is high time to realize that your forms are not clicking in. Especially, if you are using a lot of fields in a single-step form, then be sure that it’s the root cause behind getting fewer submissions.

Get to the point, using a multi-step form gets you more form submissions as users find it conversion-friendly. While conversational form is designed to ask one question at a time, you can ask more than one question using the multi-step form. With a multi-step form, they don’t feel like they are finishing a task. Rather, it is fun for them to fill out the form, which leads to higher form submissions.

2️⃣ Reduce Cognitive Load

Imagine you discover a form with too many fields at once. I am sure you will be overwhelmed right away. This is what most people do. Mostly, they add a lot of fields to a single page form. It is difficult to process so much information together.

Well, a multi-step form can make the task simple. When you add only 3-4 fields in each step, it reduces the cognitive load. Customers fill out such forms in no time. The process becomes more manageable and faster.

3️⃣ Reduce Form Abandonment Rates

Multi-step forms reduce friction in a form by breaking fields into manageable sections. So, users find it easier to complete the form. In contrast, when users find a form overwhelming, they leave the form. So, using a multi-step form can get you higher form submissions and reduce form abandonment rates.

You can use a multi-step design in all forms. But these multi-step forms are suitable to use when your form has many fields and you want higher conversions. By using multi-step forms, you can increase the form conversion rate of all types of forms and enhance user experience. Here are some common use cases of multi-step forms in WordPress –

🟪 Lead Generation

A lead generation form is created to capture more leads and nurture them accordingly.  So, a business needs to add many fields to collect relevant information and provide them with a better experience. You can divide the steps into two or more sections if needed. The first step can include full name, email address, or company name. And the second step can contain job title, company size, and budget.

🟨 Feedback

A feedback form is designed to collect feedback on any product or service. Often, a feedback form can contain 8 to 9 fields. Instead of keeping these fields on a single page, you can divide them into two sections. However, if the feedback form does not require so many fields, you can create a single-step form only. And when you need more fields that can overwhelm prospects, you should use the multi-step form.

The first step will include name, email, and star rating. And the second step will have open text, like what did you like most or how we can improve. Lastly, you can add a dropdown asking customers, “Would You Recommend Us?” These follow-up questions can help you improve effectively.

🟫 Job Application

A job application form is created to collect the applicant’s information, education, and skills. This form can contain more than 10 fields. But a person can easily get overstimulated after seeing so many fields. So, you can divide the form fields into 3 sections or more than 3.

Whether you want to create a lead generation form or a feedback form, a multi-step design will definitely get you higher form submissions. As the form needs to be dynamic, clean, and responsive, I am using the Bit Form builder to create the form. It is one of the best multi-step form plugins for WordPress. So, you can use it for creating stunning forms.

However, in this guide, I am going to create a lead generation multi-step form. Here is a step-by-step guide below:

Step 1: Go to Bit Form and Install It

At first, go to the WordPress dashboard > Add Plugins. Now, search for the Bit Form plugin in the search bar. Install and activate the plugin.

Step 2: Click on Create Form

Now, go to the Bit Form dashboard and select ‘Create form’.

Step 3: Add Steps to the Form

Here, you can add more than one step using the “Add Steps” feature. I will be adding 4 sections for this multi-step form.

Step 4: Add Step Icon

Now, you can edit the step settings. You can change the name of a step or customize it in the “Step Label” feature. Here, I have customized the name of each step with the following names: Basic Info, Pain Point, Solution Fix, and Contact. I have also added icons for all steps using the “Step Icon” feature.

Step 5: Add Title

Now, for the first step, I have added a title as an introductory text. Under the title, I added a subtitle. You can choose H1, H2, H3, or more based on your choice using the HTML tag.

Step 6: Edit Label

Now, I have added two fields – Full name and email address. You can customize any field name using the label.

Step 7: Add a DropDown

Here, I have added a dropdown and a text field. You need to simply drag the dropdown or text field in the form builder and customize its label.

Step 8: Add Fields

Now, I have added the following fields: Choose your primary objective (checkbox) and what best describes your role (dropdown).

Step 9: Add the Last Step’s Field

Lastly, I have added a field with the question – “Best time to contact you?”

Step 10: Design Your Form

Now, it’s time to design the form. You can customize the form’s color based on your choice. Here I have changed the form’s accent and font color. Besides, you can change the form’s common and individual elements and make it more visually attractive.

Here, I have chosen an individual element and used field padding so that the form looks structured and clean.

Step 12: Run Live Test

Also, do you want to integrate Google Sheets or any other CRM to automate tasks? You can easily make it possible with this automation plugin. But creating a perfect form requires sticking to some proven practices. Want to learn about them? Here’s how you create a multi-step form that actually works –

Keep Steps Short and Focused

Most people use 7 to 8 fields in a single form. This makes your prospects overwhelmed. And you don’t want them to abandon your form, right? So, you can keep 3 to 4 fields in each step. But make sure to be specific about the question so that prospects can easily get it.

Use Clear Labels

Without clear labels, users can enter the wrong information in the field. And if it’s a lead capture form, then you would face issues in nurturing the lead with misleading information. That’s why you have to use clear labels for each field. It helps prospects know exactly what they need to enter in the field and prevent errors.

Use Conditional Logic

Do you want to make your multi-step form more dynamic? Suppose you have created a job application form. Under the “Do you have any job experience” field, there is a drop-down box with yes/no options. When the user chooses yes, you can show extra fields. But when the user chooses no, you can hide those fields. This trick gives a smoother user experience to prospects.

Immediate Field Validation

The field validation is the option that tells prospects which fields are required. It will show you the fields that can’t be left blank. This is a must-have feature as it ensures accuracy. With this feature, you can collect all essential information and use the data effectively.

Bit Form is a powerful drag-and-drop form builder designed to create multi-step forms within minutes. This plugin offers 45+ customizable fields with an advanced style editor and conditional logic. So, you can edit its steps and give it a professional look. With this builder, you can create multi step form without coding or programming knowledge- simply drag your preferred field and create the form.

This plugin also offers a theme customization feature that helps you design the form’s common and individual elements flexibly. No need to worry about costing! This form builder offers flexible pricing for beginners to experts. So, you can choose a plan based on your needs and budget.

Closing Thoughts

Want to create a multi-step form that prospects can’t ignore? Then you must choose a form builder that offers multi-step form design. Mostly, the form should be mobile responsive, customizable, and have a good layout to provide prospects with a good user experience.
